Sports Council introduce new Anti Doping Rules - 15 June 2011

New anti doping rules, which will come into force on January 1, have been published. The new Rules will ensure that Ireland is fully compliant with the new World Anti-Doping Code. The WADA Code provides the framework for harmonized anti-doping policies, rules and regulations within sports organisations and among public authorities. Click here for 2009 Anti Doping Rules

 
UL Kayak Club receive CUSAI Award - 15 June 2011

Congratualtions to the University of Limerick Kayak Club who last week scooped the Intercollegiate Event of the Year Award in the multi-day category. The UL Kayak Intervarsities held in February 2008 with the support of Ulster Bank, hosted 17 colleges from across the country with approximately 400 people in attendance. It consisted of competitions in four disciplines; canoe,polo, whitewater racing, long distance and freestyle over 3 days with evening social events also organised.

 
Garda Sportstar Award goes to Canoeing - 15 June 2011

Congratualtions to Peter Egan on his selection for a Garda Sportstar Award through his involvement in Flat Water Racing. The Award will be presented by the Garda Commissioner, Fachna Murphy, at a gala dinner in Sligo on November 21st.

 
Castleconnell Wild Water Race Results - 15 June 2011

Many thanks to those who came and supported the races and a very special thanks to Alan Dooley for organising the event, including arranging the flood, gaining clearance from the necessary bodies and ensuring government permission to run the event, etc - there is an awful lot of behind the scenes work required to enable this event to run every year.

GENERATION 2012 "Homeless" - 14 August - 15 June 2011

Eoins 4th place was a miracle considering that we have no dedicated facilities for slalom here. As a result Eoin spends over 200 days abroad on man-made courses. Britain have 5 courses and have made the podium in every Olympics since 1992. France who are the most successful nation in slalom have over 50 modified or man-made courses. See here for more. 

 
Wild Water Racing AGM - 29 July 2008 - 15 June 2011

The WWR AGM will be held on the 25th of July at 8 pm at the ICU Offices. The Junior Team for the European Championships comprisig 8 paddlers will soon depart for the river Adda, Italy. You can follow their progress here and the final World Rankings for our Senior Team are now available.

 
Rheinisch paddles royally to Sixth - 12 July 2008 - 15 June 2011

With only 33 days to the Olympic slalom event, Eoin has displayed a rich vein of form. Two superb clean runs in qualification put Eoin Rheinisch in 6th place at the Pre-Worlds. He finished ahead of Campbell Walsh, Fabien Doerfler and Dave Ford (all former World medalists). Hannah Craig qualified in the top 20 with a solid clean second run.

 
Heurteau Top 20 in European Qualifying - 11 July 2008 - 15 June 2011

18th place in the qualification race was good enough to see Ciaran Heurteau through to  the semi-finals on Sunday, here in Solkan, Slovenia. Sebastian Combot, current World Champion, was 10 seconds ahead of the best Irish competitor conveying the high standard in this event. Eamon Rheinisch was unlucky to get a 50 second penalty on his 2nd run putting him outside the top 40. Results here.

 
Will Rheinisch reign in Spain? - 11 July 2008 - 15 June 2011

The last major event prior to the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing is the Pre-Worlds Championships on the river Segre in Seu, Spain. On the start line will be European Champion Campbell Walsh  and former World Champion, Fabien Lefevre. Eoin Rheinisch has had his best performances here, including a World Cup win a few seasons back. He is using this as preparation for the Games with his full support crew here including Olympic Team Manager Deaglán Ó Drisceoil  In the test event with experimental rules (single pole gates) Eoin finished an excellent fourth. Heurteau goes for Gold at U23 Europeans - 09 July 2008 - 15 June 2011

Ciaran Heurteau brings superb World Cup form to the U23 Championships being held in Solkan, Slovenia, putting him among the favourites for gold. Also competing is Eamon Rheinisch who is aiming for a place in the final. Over a thousand kilometers away at La Seu D'Urgell his brother Eoin will be seeking a podium place at the Pre-World Championships. The Irish Team at the Pre Worlds also includes Hannah Craig, Helen Barnes, Patrick Hynes, ad Daniel Menton. Track the Under 23 European results here.

 
In form Rheinisch unlucky in World Cup - 06 July 2008 - 15 June 2011

Eoin Rheinisch again showed good pace but touches kept him out of the final at the World Cup Final, on the 1972 Olympic course in Augsburg, Germany. He  is focused primarily on peaking for the Games and has been training through the World Cup Series. His 21st place finish was ahead of his team-mate Ciaran Heurteau who took 32nd position. European debut for Junior Wildwater Team - 06 July 2008 - 15 June 2011

Well done to the Irish Junior Team who participated in the tough conditions on the river Adda, Italy. Best performances  in the European Wild-Water Racing Championships came from Lorcan Feely and Aisling Conlan, who placed 29th and 23rd, respectively. Full results here.

 
Augburg feels like home for Rheinisch - 04 July 2008 - 15 June 2011

Eoin Rheinisch made the top 10 in qualification at the 3rd race in the 2008 World Cup Series. Over the years he has found this course to be a fertile hunting ground in the past. Ciaran Heurteau placed just outside the top 20 also putting him into tomorrow's semi-finals and both our women's paddlers also qualified in 32nd and 37th position for Helen Barnes and Hannah Craig. Heurteau takes 6th in Tacen World Cup - 29 June 2008 - 15 June 2011

2012 aspirant Ciaran Heurteau took 6th in the final of the World Cup race in Tacen. Showing remarkable mental toughness he was the only paddler to go faster on 2nd runs moving him up from 10th position. Local Peter Kauzer won on the difficult course which had been unlucky for Eoin Rheinisch who finished in 31st place. Our womens team had their best ever results with Hannah Craig in 16th and Helen Barnes in 18th positions. Next weekend the team competes in Augsburg, Germany, site of the '72 Olympic slalom event.

 
Rheinisch easily through to semi-finals - 28 June 2008 - 15 June 2011

With 42 days to go to the Beijing Olympics Eoin Rheinisch finished a superb 12th in qualifiers today on the river Sava, Slovenia. Ciaran Hearteau produced an excellent second run to take 20th in the field of 60 boats. Hannah Craig & Helen Barnes in WK1 also qualified in 15th and 32nd  place for tomorrow's semi-final and finals.

 
Three paddlers make semi finals in Prague - June - 15 June 2011

Eoin Rheinisch, Ciaran Hearteau and Helen Barnes all made the semi-finals at Prague's Slalom World Cup. Eoin, our Beijing competitor, finished just outside the top 10 with Ciaran taking 24th and Helen in 29th position in the Womens K1 Class. Top 20 for Irish in Wildwater Worlds - 09 June 2008 - 15 June 2011

The Irish Team of Liz Shouldice (Women's K1), Keith McGuirk and Tadhg MacIntyre (both C1) all finished in the top 20 at the World Championships in Ivrea, Italy. Liz and Tadhg were 18th in the classic and sprint respectively, with Keith in 20th place in the 6k classic less than 10% behind the winner.

 
Beijing a Step Too Far for Flat Water Racing - 19 May 2008 - 15 June 2011

The revamped K2 crew of Barry Watkins and Neil Fleming narrowly missed out on Olympic selection at the European Championships last weekend when they qualified outside the top 8, and raced the B Final. A similar fate was to fall upon Brendan Maloney in K1 1000m. These paddlers can hold their heads high with their World Class performances in the past two years and look towards 2012. Other members of the team included Sean Marchetti in his first major championship and Maciej Majchrzak with Peter Egan making the final in K2 200m. Full Results here.

 
Caffrey Best of Irish in Europeans - 12 May 2008 - 15 June 2011

Neil Caffrey with a clean run  finished in 23rd place in the semi-finals of the European Championships, just two seconds off the pace for the final which was won by Campbell Walsh. Ciaran Heurteau dropped to 36th place from 19th in the qualification round while Eoin Rheinisch was 29th carrying two penalties. www.123result.com

 
Irish Women miss boat to Beijing - 10 May 2008 - 15 June 2011

Hannah Craig, after a 19th place in the qualification round, dropped out of contention for a place in Beijing at the final qualification event. The artificial slalom course in Krakow provided testing conditions and led to penalties for both Irish paddlers. Hannah had 2 touches but on time alone was only one second off the pace for qualifying. A 50 second penalty put an end to Helen Barnes (pictured) Olympic quest See here for results

 
Olympic Team Manager Appointed - 02 April 2008 - 15 June 2011

Deaglan O Drisceoil has been appointed as Team Manager Designate for Canoeing for the XXVIIII Olympiad in Beijing, 2008. He will travel to China later this month on a fact finding mission with Olympic Council staff and several other Olympic Managers..

Refurbishment of ICU Training Centre Underway - 25 March 2008 - 15 June 2011

A €200,000 refurbishment of the ICU Training Centre which is located in the Strawberry Beds, Chapelizod is now underway. The project which has been made possible by a 60% grant from the Sports Capital Grant Scheme will include an upgrading of the changing facilities and the building of a new lecture room.

 
Sports Council announce 2008 Caridng Grants - 31 March 2008 - 15 June 2011

The Irish Sports Council and the Irish Institute of Sport announce individual grants totalling €94,000 to 14 canoeing athletes under the International Carding Scheme. List of recipients  A further €340,000 was allocated to the Canoe Union to run its High Performance Programmes.

 
Great Outdoors Canoe Achievement Awards - 15 June 2011

The awards will be presented at the ICU AGM at the Green Isle Hotel on October 18th. Irish Luck Only Missing Ingredient @ Worlds - 15 June 2011

The 8th Canoe Polo World Championships held in Edmonton, Canada, were the most competitive yet with 750 athletes from 24 countries. The U21 Men and Senior Men both finished in the top half in 10th place, with the Women taking 12th. Our U21 medallists from the Europeans faced France and Italy (eventually gold and bronze ) in their group. The Women had Australia and the Dutch among their opponents. The Irish Senior Men played well, beating Australia en route but the experience of the teams was summed up when after the last match the Irish tent was struck by lightning. Rheinisch Peaking for Peking (Beijing) - 14 July 2008 - 08 November 2008

On the course where he last won a World Cup Medal, Eoin Rheinisch took 7th place, his best performance this year, in the Pre-World Championships. The last event before the Olympics saw him finish ahead of World No.1 Alex Grimm, European Champion, Campbell Walsh and former World Champion, David Ford. This indicates that his peaking strategy is effective with his best performances in the past two races.

 
Rheinisch in Final at Pre-Worlds - 13 July 2008 - 08 November 2008

The riu Segre, a popular hunting ground for Irish kayaks, Ian Wiley won Pre-Olympics here, is like a home course to Eoin Rheinisch who qualfied for the final. He finished in 10th place in the semi-final ahead of Campbell Walsh and Dave Ford. Olympic Games favourite Fabien Lefevre took 1st place in 95 seconds, with Eoin 3 seconds back and carrying a penalty. Semi-Final Results here.

 
News from World Marathon Championships - 10 September 2008

Malcolm Banks from Salmon Leap Canoe Club wins the  45 - 49 age category in Tyn, Czech Republic over a 21.5km course, 5 laps, 5 portages. Won by 5 hundredths of a second in a 5 man sprint finish.
 
 
Marathon Worlds Team Going for it - 10 September 2008

With Gary Mawer at the helm as Team Leader a large team will attend the Marathon Worlds in the Czech Republic this weekend. The team includes Jenny Egan, Jason Briody, Fintan Mitchell, Daragh Fleming and Joe Murphy, Neil Fleming, the latter being a medal contendor. See here for results.

 
Students Seeking Gold in Eastern Europe - 10 September 2008

Two Irish teams are attending the World University Championships in Flat Water Racing and Slalom disciplines, held in Serbia and Slovakia, respectively. Breifni Earley is Team Leader for the Flat Water Racing Team with Sean Marchetti and Luke Sullivan competing. In Bratislava, Patrick Hynes, Ciaran Heurteau, Eamon Rheinisch and Pauline Griffin compete with Tadhg MacIntyre managing and Tony Griffin supporting. See here for more.

 
Irish Women take Honours - 10 September 2008

A composite of both A Team and Development Team players won the Women's Division at the Irish Open today. In a 11 goal thriller they overcame the Welsh Ladies Team. Over 50 teams participated with over half the contingent from abroad including paddlers from France, Denmark, Russia (Ladies National Squad) and the home nations. See results here.

Upgrade of ICU Training Centre completed - 08 June 2008

The ICU has just completed a €200,000 upgrade of the ICU Training Centre in Chapelizod. The project was made possible by a 65% capital grant from the Department of Tourism & Sport. Work included upgrading showers & changing rooms and an extension to include a new lecture room and stores

 
Slalom Boats Need for Next Generation - 08 June 2008

Water Abstraction Pipeline Upgrade - 09 March 2008

Kerry County Council is submitting a planning application to upgrade the water abstraction installations from the Hags Glen in the upper reaches of the Gaddagh River.  For more information and a map of the route of the pipleline see the following pdf file. The Irish Canoe Union is being consulted to highlight any observations or concerns as part of the planning process. Coming together for Rheinisch - 09 August - 09 February 2008

Things are falling into place for Eoin and he is contented with his preparation and adaptation to the conditions in Beijing. The Mens K1 class Heats commence at 08:50 (Beijing time) and he is 8th last paddler to start. The Finals are on Tueday morning. See his blog here. 

 
WW Juniors Taste Success - 22 July - 09 February 2008

Irish junior wild-water racers found their way onto the podium at an International in Switzerland. The team included Tom Burke (see photo) and had already competed in the European Junior Championships. See here for more.  

 
Alert - Avonmore Blocked at Rathdrum! - 09 February 2008

Due to scour protection works at the masonary arch railway bridge 2 miles south of Rathdrum on the Avonmore, with immediate effect all three spans of the bridge will be blocked from Monday to Friday for the next 6 weeks.  The centre span only will be cleared between Friday 18:00 and Monday 8:00 each week for canoeists to pass through.
