Community Paddlers is our new programme in the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) departmentThis programme a solidarity-through-sport initiative which uses paddle sports to bring together asylum seekers, refugees and those in wider Irish society. The intention of this program is to create opportunities for those living in direct provision centres to partake in a new activity and meet members of the community. Kilkenny Aqua Canoe Club are one of the first clubs to begin this initiative. It was inspiring to witness the great work in action! From speaking with participants, it was clear how impactful this programme can be; “I like getting to kayak with my Mom, it’s a fun way to spend time together, we enjoy it very much”, “I am getting to see so much Irish nature when I paddle”, “This is great way to meet new people in our area and try kayaking for the first time!”.
